Midweek Catch Up
This week's catch up is incredibly late. Some life stuff came up, and I ran out of time.
Alestorm was flipping amazing, significantly better than I thought it would be at all, and was really invigorating. It's really cool to see bands in mid sized venues. Glyph (the opening band) was also surprisingly better than I thought they would be. It's cool to see bands with people from here, make it big enough they can go on basically continental tours. Also when they announced their angle (lots of metal bands have an angle) was we're aliens from planet [x], I half expected them to be like vagina dentata. Because they're a metal band (well power metal) and what's more metal than a toothed vagina. Their song Defy the Night was my favourite from them. Anyways, it's always a plus when my expectations have been exceeded for seeing bands, and it was party with Alestorm.
What I've Been Watching
We finished a Court of Candy! Emily Axford really nailed the Daenerys inspired Saccharina Frostwhip, only with happier ending. Kind of. In a twisted Candyland, food pyramid, game of thrones homebrew, my favourite NPC was Duchess Primsy Coldbottle. Actually most of the Dairy Islanders were my favourites: Annabelle Cheddar, Sir Morris Brie, and Manta Ray Jack in addition to Primsy. This was an emotional roller coaster of a campaign.
The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down ended and yeah. I'm not going to say anything else other than I hope they get a second season.
I am a Fallout New Vegas girlie, so seeing the new Fallout series being California based has piqued my interest. There's so many parts I'm thrilled by in the trailer: the Brother of Steel (boo), Lucy interacting with people out in the wastes, the New California Republic flag, the Ghoul, Vault Tec bobbles, pip boys, and Belgian Malinois (are you Rex or Dogmeat maybe).
I hope it's a better adaption than the abomination of Halo. At least the score for the trailer seems to be aware of the tone, aesthetic, and genre conventions of the Fallout universe.
What I've Been Reading
I am still on my Dayspring kick and this discussion about queerness, Christianity, and pop culture is fascinating. I loved how Jason Kirk succinctly sums up the vibe Dayspring has as it "fells like listening to a bar full of saints realizing they're all pining for the same ex." There are so many clever, nuanced bits about how so much of what we write or create are influenced by other prior works it creates an interesting conundrum about dismissing or disavowing things. I enjoyed this quote by Anthony Oliveira about a similarity between his and Kirk's books: Both our books say there might be something here that they took from us that we could use. I get, especially living in queer circles, there are people who have no interest in reviving it. I have lived several of those traumas myself. But I think there's a queer weirdo who started all this, and I want to really think about what he said.
Reactor published a really cool novella Have You Eaten by Sarah Gailey. It's about a group of found family queers existing in what can only be described as a post apocalyptic, post-civil-war-ish America, in which gender nonconforming or queer individuals are hunted by different versions of the state. I really enjoyed the incorporation of recipe cards as a narrative device, care as something we do with each(specifically as a reciprocal action in relationships), and how important food is in maintaining ties to community. The added bonus of so many neat foraging and botanical details really helps establish the world in Have You Eaten as a believably place. Finally, I love how it's split into four parts because it makes it easier to come back to if you don't read it all in one go.
Small Mammal Update
Since the partial eclipse, Delphine has been screaming. Well yelling. Not about anything medical, but just yelling. I don't know for what or why (perhaps she wants to be Empress sooner than later) but something about the Moon and the Sun interacting together unleashed her newfound yelling.
Perhaps she's yelling to remind us that life is fleeting, that we will die too, so why not use the fancy cups or eat that extravagant delicacy (luxury) thing you've been saving for a special day?
What I've Been Working
I've been working on Bergamot and Bygones my little home brew that I've mentioned before in a previous catch up.
Other than that, catching up on the other stuff I've yet to post.
